You may have noticed in the left-hand side bar that it looks like you can RSVP to the wedding right on this site. Well, you can!
In one of my prouder geek moments, I researched and searched and played around until I figured out how to make an RSVP widget.
I'm using a lot of widgets on this site...to show you the local weather, to show you the countdown of days until the wedding. Basically widgets are little bits of code you can add to your sidebar to bring various dynamic content to your web site. The beauty of widgets is that widget makers and blog software makers have conspired to make it easy for wanna-be geeks like me to add lots of blog bling to our sites without having to learn java script and other types of technology ourselves.
Only no one really makes an RSVP widget already. Which shocked me.
Now, you can read in the extended body of this post how I cobbled together this solution, but for those of you less interested in the underpinnings of this cool little feature, let me just emphasize how it works from your end:
Step One: Enter the appropriate RSVP info, such as your name, the number attending and the name of your guest if applicable. Or enter your name and place an X in the decline box if that is the sad reality.
Step Two: Add a comment if you want to send us a little message.
Step Three: Click Send.
You should see another browser window open at this point, and it will seem clear that some kind of web magic is happening, until finally our wedding web site will re-load. Yes, you will now have two versions of our wedding web site open. That's OK, that means the RSVP worked. (And I'm sorry to say that someone sent a blank RSVP on Thursday night at 9:05PM. If that was you...please try again!)
Now, for you geeks, read the rest of the entry...
